I was commissioned to create this piece for a large party that was thrown in New Orleans for Mardis Gras. The theme of the party was "Sexiest". This theme was the only guideline given to me when I was asked to create a sexy montage to be looped and projected on a fourteen foot wall between two DJ's that would fit to any song or beat played throughout the night.
With the minimal feed back given by my employer, I was forced to create my own parameters for this project. The first self imposed boundary, was to use only still images instead of video, which created interesting and useful challenges in creating movement and rhythm.I also limited myself to what means by which I could obtain my images, which would be Google. Unfortunately, so much of what we find sexy these days is what we see in mainstream porn. The internet, is of course, the obvious location of much of this porn.
Google's image search, when manipulated by specific key words has a tendency to produce a brilliant selection relevant and irrelevant images that paint ridiculous pictures of the input word. Therefore, my images were obtained by plugging in the words sexy, sexier, sexiest, bondage, Betty Page, queer, Lolita, etc. By doing this, I forced Google to provide me with all of the images I would need to visually discuss notions of sexy today and throughout popular culture, via the internet.
This video is, what i hope will be an early example of where I plan to take my visual and digital skills in the future. My favorite work is always either to music, for music, or in musical venues. Though I have laid an audio track under this piece, it can be played against almost any other beat. I also plan to continue working with stills and an animation, which I have begun to do in this video. |
